Google Ads changes constantly. How do you keep up and decide which new features to test?
How you keep up: the official Google Ads blog and release notes, industry publications such as Search Engine Land, and the practitioner community where people report what a feature actually does rather than what the announcement claims. Google's own guidance always favours automation and broader targeting, so it is worth reading critically.
How you decide what to test:
- Does it address a problem this account has? A new asset type is irrelevant if your bottleneck is landing page conversion rate.
- Can you test it without risking the account? Test on a smaller campaign, or a portion of budget, before rolling out.
- Can you measure the result cleanly? If the change coincides with a seasonal peak you will learn nothing. Use experiments and drafts where possible so you get a genuine comparison rather than a before-and-after.
Note: Being able to name something Google pushed hard that you tested and rejected — and explain why with data — is the strongest possible answer. It shows you serve the advertiser rather than the platform, which is exactly what a client is paying for.
