About Amazon Web Services (AWS)
Amazon Web Services (AWS) is the cloud computing arm of Amazon and the largest cloud provider in the world, offering compute, storage, databases, networking, analytics, machine learning and generative AI services to millions of customers from start-ups to governments. AWS operates data centre regions in Mumbai and Hyderabad and serves Indian enterprises, public sector bodies and digital-native companies through a large local organisation.
In India AWS hires across Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, Delhi NCR, Pune and Chennai for solutions architects, cloud support engineers, software development engineers, technical account managers, professional services consultants, account managers and business development, along with partner, training and marketing roles. Freshers join mainly as cloud support associates, through the solutions architect and technical early-career programmes, or as software engineers from campus placements; experienced professionals are hired laterally in large numbers for customer-facing technical roles.
AWS interviews are built around Amazon's Leadership Principles, so interviewers look for concrete evidence of customer obsession, ownership, bias for action, diving deep and delivering results, backed by strong technical fundamentals in networking, operating systems, databases and distributed systems. Clear communication and the ability to explain trade-offs to a customer are essential for architect and support roles.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) hiring process
AWS follows Amazon's standardised hiring process: a screen, an assessment, and a loop of interviews scored against the Leadership Principles, with a Bar Raiser in the loop to keep the hiring bar consistent.
1. Application and resume review
Apply on the Amazon jobs portal, through a job portal such as Jobaaj, via employee referral or through campus placements. Recruiters and hiring managers screen for role-relevant experience, certifications such as AWS Solutions Architect or Developer, and evidence of measurable impact.
2. Recruiter screen
A 20 to 30 minute call on your background, motivation, location, compensation and notice period, with a briefing on the Leadership Principles and the interview format. Recruiters often share preparation material for the loop.
3. Online assessment
Software engineers complete a timed coding assessment with algorithmic problems and a work-style questionnaire. Cloud support and solutions architect candidates may receive a technical and situational online assessment or a written exercise instead.
4. Phone or technical screen
A 45 to 60 minute interview with an engineer or architect covering technical depth for the role plus one or two Leadership Principle questions. Architects are asked to design a solution for a customer scenario; support engineers troubleshoot a described incident.
5. The loop
Four to five back-to-back virtual or onsite interviews of 45 to 60 minutes each, with different interviewers, each owning specific Leadership Principles and technical competencies. One interviewer is a trained Bar Raiser from outside the team who has veto power over the hiring decision.
6. Debrief and offer
Interviewers submit written feedback and a hire or no-hire vote, then meet to decide. Offers include base pay, a sign-on bonus paid over the first two years and restricted stock units on a back-loaded vesting schedule.
Amazon Web Services (AWS) interview rounds
The rounds below follow the loop for a solutions architect or cloud engineer; software engineering loops replace the architecture rounds with coding and system design, and sales roles with customer and deal scenarios.
Round 1: Online assessment
Around 90 to 120 minutes combining technical questions with a work-style and situational-judgement section that maps to the Leadership Principles.
- Software engineers: two algorithmic coding problems on arrays, graphs or dynamic programming
- Support and architect roles: networking, Linux, databases and troubleshooting scenarios
- Situational questions about prioritisation and ownership
Round 2: Technical phone screen
A 45 to 60 minute interview with an engineer or architect mixing technical depth with one Leadership Principle question.
- Explain how DNS, TCP and HTTPS work end to end
- Design a highly available three-tier web application on AWS
- Debug an EC2 instance that has become unreachable
- Tell me about a time you took ownership of a problem outside your role
Round 3: Technical deep dive
A 60 minute loop interview probing your strongest technical area and how deeply you understand systems you have built.
- Trade-offs between relational, NoSQL and object storage for a workload
- Cost optimisation and right-sizing a customer's architecture
- Security fundamentals: IAM, encryption, network segmentation
Round 4: System or solution design
A 60 minute whiteboard-style session where you design for scale, resilience and cost while explaining decisions as you would to a customer.
- Design a data pipeline for streaming analytics
- Migrate an on-premises application to the cloud with minimal downtime
- Multi-region disaster recovery and recovery objectives
Round 5: Leadership Principles with the Bar Raiser
A 60 minute behavioural interview using the STAR format, run by the Bar Raiser and a hiring manager across two sessions.
- A time you disagreed with your manager and what you did
- Your biggest failure and what you learned
- A decision you made with incomplete data
- How you handled a customer whose request you could not meet

Amazon Web Services (AWS) interview FAQs
Q1How many rounds are there in the AWS interview process?
Typically five to seven touchpoints: a recruiter screen, an online assessment, a technical phone screen, and a loop of four to five interviews held on the same day or across two days. Each loop interviewer covers assigned Leadership Principles plus technical competencies, and one of them is a Bar Raiser from outside the hiring team.
Q2What is a Bar Raiser and why does it matter?
A Bar Raiser is a trained, experienced Amazon interviewer from a different team who joins the loop to ensure every hire raises the average quality of the organisation. They focus heavily on the Leadership Principles, ask deep follow-up questions and can veto a hire even if the hiring manager is in favour, so prepare behavioural examples as seriously as technical topics.
Q3Tell me about a time you had to dive deep to solve a problem.
Use the STAR structure: describe the situation and why the surface explanation was insufficient, the specific data, logs or metrics you examined, the root cause you found and the fix or decision that followed, with a measurable result. Interviewers will probe details, so choose an example you personally drove and can explain at a technical level.
Q4How would you design a highly available web application on AWS?
Walk through the tiers: a load balancer in front of auto-scaled compute across multiple availability zones, a managed database with a standby replica, static content on object storage with a content delivery network, and health checks with automated failover. Discuss trade-offs on cost, recovery time and consistency, and mention monitoring and infrastructure as code as part of the design.
Q5Describe a time you disagreed with a decision and how you handled it.
This maps to the principle of having backbone, disagreeing and committing. Pick an example where you raised a concern with data, listened to the other side, and either changed the outcome or committed fully once the decision was made. Show respect for the other person and focus on the result for the customer rather than on being right.
Q6What is the salary and eligibility for AWS roles in India?
Entry-level cloud support and early-career architect roles are open to engineering graduates with solid networking and operating systems fundamentals; AWS certifications help but are not mandatory. Compensation combines base pay, a sign-on bonus spread over two years and restricted stock units that vest more heavily in later years, so compare the total across four years rather than only the first-year figure.
