About HCLTech
HCLTech, formerly HCL Technologies, is one of India's largest IT services and engineering companies, headquartered in Noida. It works with clients in financial services, manufacturing, life sciences, technology, telecom, retail and the public sector across more than 60 countries, with practices in digital engineering, cloud, data and AI, cybersecurity, infrastructure services and a software products business, HCLSoftware. The company employs over two lakh people worldwide, the majority of them in India.
HCLTech hires freshers through campus placements and regular off-campus drives for Graduate Engineer Trainee and Software Engineer roles, and it is unusual among Indian IT majors for its TechBee programme, which takes students straight after Class 12 into a paid year of training followed by a job and a sponsored degree. Lateral hiring covers development, cloud, SAP, data engineering, network and infrastructure, cybersecurity and engineering roles across Noida, Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Lucknow, Nagpur, Madurai and Vijayawada.
The company looks for dependable programming and networking fundamentals, communication that holds up with global clients, and a willingness to relocate and work in rotational shifts, since a large share of its infrastructure and support work runs around the clock.
HCLTech hiring process
1. Application and eligibility screen
Freshers apply through campus drives, off-campus notifications on the HCLTech careers site and job portals such as Jobaaj. Typical eligibility for engineering roles is a B.E., B.Tech, M.Tech or MCA with 60 percent throughout and no active backlogs; for TechBee it is Class 12 in the science stream with mathematics. Laterals apply to specific requisitions or come in through referrals.
2. Online aptitude and technical test
A proctored online test of roughly an hour with sections on quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning, verbal ability and technical or programming fundamentals. Sectional cut-offs apply and there is no negative marking. Some drives add a short coding section for developer roles.
3. Group discussion
Many campus and walk-in drives include a ten to fifteen minute group discussion on a general or technology topic to check communication, listening and team behaviour before interviews.
4. Technical interview
A thirty to forty-five minute conversation with an HCLTech engineer or team lead on your projects, core subjects and a live coding problem. Infrastructure and network roles get questions on operating systems and networking instead of heavy coding.
5. HR interview
A twenty to thirty minute discussion about motivation, relocation and shift flexibility, the service agreement and salary expectations.
6. Offer, verification and onboarding
Selected candidates receive an offer, complete document and background verification, and join a training batch before project deployment. TechBee candidates start their year-long training programme instead.
HCLTech interview rounds
HCLTech's fresher selection runs four stages, with the group discussion sometimes dropped in smaller drives. Laterals usually face a technical screen, one or two technical rounds and HR.
Round 1: Online aptitude and technical test
Typically around 60 questions in 60 minutes across four sections, each with its own cut-off that has historically been high, so accuracy across all sections matters.
- Percentages, ratios, time and work, data interpretation
- Series, coding and decoding, puzzles, blood relations
- Reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary
- Programming fundamentals: output prediction in C or Java, data structures, DBMS and OS basics
Round 2: Group discussion
Ten to fifteen minutes in a group of eight to twelve. Evaluators score clarity, structure, listening and courtesy rather than volume.
- Impact of AI and automation on jobs
- Is remote work here to stay
- Electric vehicles in India
Round 3: Technical interview
Thirty to forty-five minutes with an engineer or lead, usually on video. Expect a project walk-through, fundamentals and a live problem. Developer candidates are asked to code on a shared editor, while infrastructure candidates get scenario questions on troubleshooting servers and networks.
- OOP concepts, difference between C and C++, pointers and memory
- Data structures: arrays, linked lists, stacks and queues, a sorting algorithm and its complexity
- DBMS: joins, normalisation, write a query; OS: processes, threads, deadlock
- Networking basics such as OSI layers, TCP versus UDP and DNS for infrastructure roles
Round 4: HR interview
Twenty to thirty minutes with a recruiter or hiring manager focused on fit and flexibility.
- Why HCLTech and what do you know about the company
- Willingness to relocate, work rotational shifts and sign the service agreement
- Career goals, a teamwork example, strengths and weaknesses

HCLTech interview FAQs
Q1How many rounds are there in the HCLTech interview process?
Freshers usually face four: an online aptitude and technical test, a group discussion, a technical interview and an HR interview. Smaller drives may skip the group discussion, and lateral candidates typically go through a technical screen, one or two technical rounds and HR. The process generally takes two to four weeks from test to result, with joining dates based on project demand.
Q2How difficult is the HCLTech online test?
The questions are of standard placement difficulty, but the sectional cut-offs have been high, often reported around 70 percent, so a weak section can eliminate you even if your total is good. Practise all four sections with a timer, aim for accuracy over attempts, and revise basic programming output questions, which are the most common technical items.
Q3What is the HCLTech TechBee programme?
TechBee is an early-career programme for students who have completed Class 12. Selected candidates get about a year of paid technical training at HCLTech, then a full-time job, and can pursue a sponsored degree alongside, including an online degree programme with a partner institute. Selection involves an online aptitude test and interviews, and it suits students who want to start earning early while continuing to study.
Q4Explain the difference between TCP and UDP.
TCP is connection-oriented, guarantees delivery and ordering through acknowledgements and retransmission, and is used where accuracy matters, such as web pages, email and file transfer. UDP is connectionless, has no delivery guarantee and lower overhead, so it suits streaming, gaming and DNS lookups where speed matters more than a lost packet. Mention the three-way handshake to show depth.
Q5Why do you want to join HCLTech?
Point to specifics: HCLTech's strength in engineering and infrastructure services, its cloud and AI practices, its software products business, structured fresher training, or the flexibility of programmes like TechBee. Connect that to your own plan, such as building a career in cloud infrastructure or product engineering. Interviewers can tell a generic answer from one that shows you have read about the company.
Q6What is the fresher salary at HCLTech and who is eligible?
Graduate Engineer Trainee and Software Engineer offers have typically been in the range of about 3.5 to 4.5 lakh per annum, with higher bands for specialist coding tracks and laterals paid on experience and skill. Eligibility is usually a B.E., B.Tech, M.Tech or MCA with 60 percent throughout and no active backlogs, while TechBee requires Class 12 with mathematics. Check the specific drive notification for exact figures.
