About WPP

WPP is one of the world's largest advertising and marketing services groups, headquartered in London and operating in more than 100 countries. In India it is best known through its agency brands: Ogilvy for creative and brand work, GroupM and its media agencies Mindshare, Wavemaker and EssenceMediacom for media planning and buying, VML (formed from Wunderman Thompson and VMLY&R) for integrated and digital marketing, and specialist units in public relations, data and commerce. Together these employ well over 10,000 people across Mumbai, Gurugram, Bengaluru, Chennai and Kolkata.

Hiring happens at the agency level rather than through a single WPP portal. Freshers typically enter as management trainees, account executives, junior copywriters or art directors, media planners and analysts, usually through campus visits to mass-communication and management colleges, internship conversions and referrals. Experienced professionals move between WPP agencies frequently, so lateral hiring is constant.

Across its agencies WPP looks for curiosity about brands and consumers, cultural awareness, clear writing and speaking, comfort with data and the ability to sell an idea to a client. Digital and AI-assisted production skills are now expected in creative and media roles alike.

WPP hiring process

Each WPP agency runs its own recruitment, but the shape of the process is similar across Ogilvy, GroupM, VML and the other networks. Most rounds are virtual, with a final in-person meeting for senior roles.

1. Application or referral

You apply on the WPP careers site, the individual agency's careers page, LinkedIn or a job portal such as Jobaaj. Creative roles need a portfolio link; media and data roles benefit from a resume that quantifies campaigns you have worked on. Referrals from current agency staff carry weight.

2. Recruiter screen

A 15 to 20 minute call from the agency's talent team covering your background, the brands you have worked on, salary expectations and notice period. For freshers the conversation focuses on internships and why advertising.

3. Assignment or portfolio review

Creative candidates present their portfolio or complete a short brief, for example a campaign idea for a real client. Media candidates may get a planning case with a budget and audience data. Account management candidates sometimes receive a client-brief exercise to structure a response.

4. Functional interviews

One or two rounds with the team lead, creative director, business director or media head. Expect a detailed discussion of the assignment, your understanding of the agency's clients and how you handle deadlines and feedback.

5. Leadership and HR round

A conversation with a senior leader on culture fit and career direction, followed by an HR discussion on compensation. Offers usually arrive within one to three weeks of the final round, and background verification follows.

What to expect

WPP interview rounds

The rounds below reflect the common flow for entry and mid-level roles at WPP agencies in India. Senior creative and client-leadership roles add one or two leadership conversations.

Round 1: Recruiter conversation

A short telephone or video call with the agency's talent acquisition team. It confirms your experience, interest in the specific agency and practical details, and decides which team you are routed to.

  • Walk me through your resume and the brands you have worked on
  • Why this agency and why advertising or media
  • Notice period, location and salary expectations

Round 2: Assignment, case or portfolio

Take-home or live, typically two to five days for a take-home brief. Creative teams judge the idea and craft; media teams judge the planning logic, use of audience and budget data, and the clarity of the deck.

  • Build a campaign idea for a given client brief
  • Plan a media mix for a product launch with a fixed budget
  • Present three pieces of work you are proudest of and why

Round 3: Team interview

Forty-five minutes to an hour with the hiring manager and one or two team members. They probe how you think about consumers, how you respond to feedback and how you handle a difficult client.

  • Critique a recent campaign you liked or disliked
  • How would you brief a creative team from a client's problem statement
  • Explain reach, frequency, CPM or attribution in simple words (media roles)

Round 4: Leadership interview

A senior leader from the agency, such as an executive creative director or business head, assesses ambition, cultural fit and whether you can grow with the agency's key accounts.

  • Where do you see advertising heading with AI and retail media
  • Tell me about a time you pushed back on a client or a boss
  • What would you change about our agency's recent work

Round 5: HR discussion

Compensation structure, joining date, work model and policies. This is the stage to negotiate and to ask about learning programmes and internal moves between WPP agencies.

  • Expected fixed and variable pay
  • Hybrid or office-based working arrangements

WPP interview FAQs

Q1How many rounds are there in the WPP interview process?

Typically three to five: a recruiter screen, an assignment or portfolio round, one or two interviews with the hiring team and a leadership or HR conversation. The exact count depends on the agency, so a GroupM media planner and an Ogilvy copywriter will see slightly different flows, but the overall pattern is the same.

Q2How long does WPP take to make a decision?

Most candidates hear back within two to four weeks of the first call. Assignments add a few days, and senior roles that need a meeting with a network leader can take longer. Polite follow-up with the recruiter after a week of silence is normal and expected in agencies.

Q3Which recent campaign do you admire and why?

Pick a campaign from the last year, ideally one by a WPP agency or one of its clients, and explain the insight behind it, the craft of the execution and the business result. Interviewers want to see that you think about strategy and outcomes, not just that an ad was funny or looked good.

Q4How would you handle a client who rejects your idea?

Describe a real example if you have one. Show that you would first understand the client's concern, separate the objective from the execution, offer an alternative that keeps the insight, and know when to escalate to your business director. Agencies value people who protect the idea without damaging the relationship.

Q5What do you know about our clients and our agency?

Research the specific agency's roster, its recent award-winning work and any new business wins in India. Mention two or three clients you would like to work on and why. This question filters out candidates who applied to every agency without preparation.

Q6What is the typical starting salary at WPP agencies in India?

Fresher packages at Indian agencies are typically modest, in the low-to-mid single-digit lakhs per year, with faster growth once you have two or three years of campaign experience. Media planning, data and digital specialist roles usually pay more than traditional creative and servicing roles at the same level.
