Goldman Sachs was established in 1869 by Marcus Goldman in New York City, operating from a modest one-room basement office adjacent to a coal chute. Samuel Sachs, Goldman's son-in-law, joined the firm in 1882. Later, in 1885, Henry Goldman, Marcus's son, and Ludwig Dreyfuss, his son-in-law, also became part of the business, prompting the firm to adopt its current name, Goldman Sachs & Co. Notably, the company was an early adopter of commercial paper for entrepreneurs and became a member of the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in 1896, boasting a capital of $1.6 million by 1898. It expanded its footprint by establishing offices in Boston and Chicago in 1900, followed by San Francisco in 1918, and Philadelphia and St. Louis in 1920.

Goldman Sachs ventured into the initial public offering (IPO) market in 1906 by taking Sears, Roebuck and Company public, leveraging Henry Goldman's close ties with Julius Rosenwald, one of Sears' owners. Subsequent IPO underwriting projects included General Cigar Company in 1906, F. W. Woolworth Company in 1912, and Continental Can. The firm pioneered the use of the price–earnings ratio for valuing companies, allowing it to raise funds for businesses with limited tangible assets.

In 1912, Henry S. Bowers became the first non-family member to be named a partner of the company. However, in 1917, Henry Goldman resigned due to increasing pressure from other partners over his pro-German stance. The Sachs family assumed full control until Waddill Catchings joined in 1918, eventually becoming the partner with the largest stake in the firm by 1928. Goldman Sachs made significant investments, acquiring substantial interests in Merck & Co. in 1919 and General Foods in 1922.

On December 4, 1928, the firm introduced the Goldman Sachs Trading Corp., a closed-end fund. However, this venture failed during the Wall Street Crash of 1929 amidst allegations of share price manipulation and insider trading.

Goldman Recruitment Process

Interview Process

The interview process at Goldman Sachs is rigorous and typically consists of multiple stages designed to assess candidates' skills, experience, and cultural fit. While the specifics may vary depending on the role and division within the company, the general process often includes the following steps:

Online Application: Candidates apply for positions through the Goldman Sachs website or campus recruiting portals, submitting their resumes and sometimes additional materials such as cover letters or transcripts.

Resume Screening: The HR team reviews applications to identify candidates whose qualifications align with the requirements of the role.

First-round Interviews: Selected candidates are invited to participate in initial interviews, which may be conducted over the phone or via video conference. These interviews often focus on behavioral questions to assess the candidate's communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and alignment with Goldman Sachs' culture and values.

Technical Interviews: For certain roles, particularly in technical or quantitative fields such as engineering, finance, or data science, candidates may be asked to complete technical interviews. These interviews typically involve solving case studies, coding challenges, or answering technical questions related to the candidate's area of expertise.

Assessment Centers: Candidates who successfully pass the initial rounds of interviews may be invited to attend an assessment center, where they participate in a series of exercises and assessments designed to evaluate their skills and abilities in a simulated work environment. This may include group discussions, case studies, presentations, and other exercises.

Final-round Interviews: The final round of interviews typically involves meeting with senior leaders, hiring managers, or members of the hiring committee. These interviews may delve deeper into the candidate's background, experience, and fit for the specific role and team.

Offer Stage: Candidates who impress throughout the interview process may receive a job offer from Goldman Sachs. The offer will outline the terms and conditions of employment, including salary, benefits, start date, and any other relevant details.

Throughout the interview process, candidates are evaluated not only on their technical skills and qualifications but also on their ability to collaborate, communicate effectively, and demonstrate Goldman Sachs' core values such as integrity, excellence, and teamwork. Additionally, the company places a strong emphasis on diversity and inclusion, so candidates may also be assessed on their commitment to promoting these values within the workplace.
