About Sun Pharma

Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is India's largest pharmaceutical company by revenue and one of the top generic drug makers in the world, headquartered in Mumbai. It sells formulations in more than 100 countries, is the largest pharma company in India and a leading generics player in the United States, and has been expanding its speciality portfolio in dermatology, ophthalmology and onco-dermatology. The company employs over 40,000 people worldwide.

In India it runs research centres in Vadodara, Gurugram and Mumbai and manufacturing plants across Gujarat, Maharashtra, Himachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Madhya Pradesh and other states. It hires B.Pharm, M.Pharm, M.Sc, chemical engineering and PhD graduates for formulation and analytical R&D, production, quality assurance and quality control, regulatory affairs and pharmacovigilance, and hires science and management graduates at scale for medical representative and field sales roles across its many divisions.

Sun Pharma values scientific rigour, discipline with documentation and good manufacturing practice, and compliance awareness, because its plants are audited by regulators such as the US FDA. For sales roles it looks for product knowledge, persistence and relationship-building with doctors and chemists.

Sun Pharma hiring process

Hiring at Sun Pharma is site and function driven. Plant and R&D roles have technical panels; sales roles move faster with fewer rounds. Most candidates go through the stages below.

1. Application and screening

Apply through the careers site, a campus drive at pharmacy or science colleges, a walk-in drive advertised for a plant, a consultant, or a job portal such as Jobaaj. HR screens for the required qualification and, for experienced roles, relevant plant, dosage-form or therapy-area experience, then calls to confirm location and expectations.

2. Written or online test

Freshers for R&D, QA and QC roles often take a written test on pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical analysis, GMP basics and aptitude. Sales freshers take a short aptitude and communication test. Laterals usually skip this stage.

3. Technical or functional interview

A 30 to 45 minute interview with the department head or a senior scientist. R&D and quality candidates are tested on formulation, analytical techniques, documentation and regulatory guidelines; production candidates on unit operations and GMP; sales candidates on therapy knowledge and selling approach.

4. Panel or plant-head round

Shortlisted plant and R&D candidates meet a panel that can include the plant head, QA head and HR. Sales candidates meet the regional or zonal manager, sometimes with a field visit or role-play.

5. HR discussion

Compensation, location, shift pattern for plant roles, and joining timelines are agreed. Sun Pharma runs reference and background checks before releasing the offer.

6. Offer, medical and induction

After the offer and a pre-employment medical check for plant roles, new joiners go through GMP, safety and product induction before being deployed.

What to expect

Sun Pharma interview rounds

The rounds below describe the typical loop for R&D, quality and production roles, with notes on sales.

Round 1: Written or online test

Sixty to 90 minutes for fresher technical roles. Questions are at the level of a good pharmacy or science graduate.

  • Pharmaceutics: dosage forms, dissolution, stability
  • Analytical techniques: HPLC, UV, dissolution apparatus, method validation basics
  • GMP, GLP and documentation practices
  • Basic aptitude and English

Round 2: Technical interview

Thirty to 45 minutes with a senior scientist, QA manager or production head. Interviewers dig into your project or previous plant work.

  • Explain your M.Pharm project or a formulation you worked on
  • How do you investigate an out-of-specification result
  • Steps in tablet manufacturing and common process deviations
  • What is data integrity and why does it matter in an FDA audit

Round 3: Panel round

Twenty to 40 minutes with the plant or department head and HR. For sales, this is the zonal manager interview.

  • How would you handle a batch failure under a delivery deadline
  • Describe a regulatory audit you supported
  • Sales: how would you detail a new dermatology brand to a busy doctor
  • Why Sun Pharma and why this site or division

Round 4: HR interview

Fifteen to 20 minutes on compensation, relocation to a plant location, shifts and joining.

  • Tell me about yourself and your career plan
  • Comfort with working at a plant location such as Halol, Baddi or Dewas
  • Expected salary and notice period

Sun Pharma interview FAQs

Q1How many rounds are there in the Sun Pharma interview process?

R&D, quality and production roles usually have three to four rounds: a written or online test for freshers, a technical interview with the department head or a senior scientist, a panel round with the plant or function head, and an HR discussion. Medical representative and sales roles generally have two interviews, with the area or regional manager and then HR.

Q2How long does Sun Pharma take to hire?

Walk-in drives for plant roles can produce an offer within a week, and sales hiring usually closes in one to three weeks. R&D, regulatory and corporate roles take three to six weeks because panels, reference checks and pre-employment medicals are involved. Campus offers follow the college placement timeline with joining a few months later.

Q3What technical questions are asked in a Sun Pharma QA or QC interview?

Expect questions on GMP and GLP, out-of-specification and deviation handling, CAPA, change control, method validation, HPLC troubleshooting, stability studies and data integrity principles. Answer using the correct terminology and describe the actual procedure you followed, including documentation, because interviewers are checking audit readiness as much as knowledge.

Q4What is asked in a Sun Pharma medical representative interview?

Interviewers check your understanding of basic anatomy and the therapy area of the division, your comfort with doctor visits and targets, and how you would plan a day of calls. Prepare a short product detailing of any common drug, know the difference between a brand and a generic, and show that you can handle rejection without losing momentum.

Q5How should I answer "Why Sun Pharma?"

Reference the company's scale as India's largest pharma company, its global generics and speciality businesses, and its research and manufacturing footprint. Then link that to your own plan, such as working on regulated-market products or growing into a formulation scientist, so it is clear why Sun Pharma specifically rather than any pharma company.

Q6What is the fresher salary at Sun Pharma for pharmacy and science graduates?

Trainee and officer roles in QA, QC, production and R&D typically pay in the low-to-mid single-digit lakhs per year, with M.Pharm and PhD holders in research starting higher. Medical representative roles pay a similar fixed salary plus incentives and travel allowances. Ask HR about the plant location, shift allowance and the review cycle for confirmation.
