2. GATE score or written test screening

For engineering trainee roles, NHPC typically shortlists candidates using their GATE score or a written examination, in line with common practice at power sector PSUs. Non-technical roles may instead go through a separate written aptitude test.

3. Document verification

Shortlisted candidates undergo verification of educational qualifications, category certificates, and identity documents. This stage is usually conducted at a designated NHPC office or through an online upload process.

4. Technical interview

A panel of senior engineers assesses core technical knowledge in civil, electrical, or mechanical engineering, along with awareness of hydro power project processes. Candidates are also asked about academic projects or prior field experience.

5. HR or personality round

A discussion with HR and senior management evaluates communication, adaptability, and suitability for postings across remote project sites. This round often covers willingness to work at hilly or difficult terrain locations.

6. Medical examination and offer

Selected candidates undergo a medical fitness check before receiving an appointment letter and joining a structured training programme. Training typically familiarises new joiners with project site operations before formal placement.

NHPC's interview process typically runs four to five stages for engineering and executive positions.

Round 1: GATE score or written test screening
