About NTT DATA
NTT DATA is the IT services and consulting arm of Japan's NTT Group, and one of the ten largest IT service providers in the world. It designs, builds and runs enterprise systems for clients in banking, insurance, healthcare, manufacturing, telecom and the public sector, with a growing share of work in cloud, data, AI and cybersecurity. Globally the company employs well over 1.5 lakh people across more than 50 countries.
India is NTT DATA's largest delivery base outside Japan. Its Indian entities, including NTT DATA Services and the Business Solutions unit, run large centres in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Noida, Pune, Mumbai and Coimbatore, with tens of thousands of engineers, consultants and support staff. Typical entry roles are Associate Software Engineer, Graduate Engineer Trainee, Systems Analyst and Process Associate, with lateral hiring across cloud, SAP, Salesforce, data engineering and infrastructure.
In hiring, NTT DATA looks for clear fundamentals in one programming language, comfort with databases and basic networking, and a client-facing attitude: many roles involve direct interaction with Japanese, US and European customers, so communication and reliability weigh as heavily as coding.
NTT DATA hiring process
1. Application and shortlisting
Freshers enter through campus drives, national off-campus drives advertised on the NTT DATA careers portal, and job portals such as Jobaaj. Standard eligibility is a B.E., B.Tech, M.Tech, MCA or M.Sc with around 60 percent throughout and no active backlogs at the time of joining. Experienced candidates apply directly to open requisitions or are approached by recruiters.
2. Online assessment
Shortlisted freshers sit an online test of roughly two hours covering English, quantitative ability, logical reasoning and computer programming, with sectional cut-offs and no negative marking. Some drives add a short coding section. Lateral candidates may get a role-specific technical test instead.
3. Group discussion
Used in some campus and walk-in drives to filter large batches. A group of eight to twelve candidates discusses a general topic for ten to fifteen minutes; evaluators look at clarity, listening and team behaviour rather than winning the argument.
4. Technical interview
One or two rounds, usually on video, with a senior engineer or project lead. Expect questions on your resume projects, core subjects and a live problem in your preferred language.
5. HR and managerial interview
A conversation about your goals, willingness to relocate or work in shifts, salary expectations and fit with the team. For laterals this often merges with a managerial round on delivery experience.
6. Offer, documentation and onboarding
Selected candidates receive an offer letter, complete background verification and document upload, and are assigned to a project or training batch. Freshers typically go through a few weeks of induction and technology training before deployment.
NTT DATA interview rounds
NTT DATA runs three to four rounds for freshers and usually two to three for experienced hires. Every round is an elimination stage.
Round 1: Online aptitude and programming test
Around 90 to 100 questions in about 120 minutes, split into English, quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and a computer programming section. There is a minimum score in each section, so balanced preparation matters more than excelling in one area.
- Percentages, ratios, time and work, data interpretation
- Series, puzzles, seating arrangement, syllogisms
- Reading comprehension, sentence correction, vocabulary
- Output prediction in C, C++ or Java, basic data structures and OOP
Round 2: Group discussion (selected drives)
Ten to fifteen minutes on a current-affairs or technology topic. Evaluators mark initiative, structure, listening and courtesy.
- Impact of AI on jobs
- Digital India and cashless economy
- Work from home versus office
Round 3: Technical interview
Thirty to forty-five minutes with an engineer or team lead over video. The interviewer goes through your projects in detail, then tests fundamentals and asks you to write or explain a small program. Laterals should expect the same structure with deeper questions on their specific stack, recent deliveries and how they handled production issues.
- OOP concepts, difference between abstract class and interface
- SQL joins, indexes, normalisation, a query on a given table
- Arrays, strings, linked lists; reverse a string, find duplicates
- Basics of cloud, networking or the tool stack listed on your resume
Round 4: HR interview
Fifteen to thirty minutes with a recruiter or hiring manager. It checks communication, stability and flexibility rather than technical depth.
- Tell me about yourself and why NTT DATA
- Willingness to relocate, sign a service agreement or work in rotational shifts
- Strengths, weaknesses and a situation where you handled conflict

NTT DATA interview FAQs
Q1How many rounds are there in the NTT DATA interview process?
Freshers usually face three to four rounds: an online aptitude and programming test, an optional group discussion in large drives, a technical interview and an HR interview. Experienced candidates typically have two technical or managerial rounds followed by HR. The whole cycle takes two to four weeks in an off-campus drive and can be faster on campus.
Q2How difficult is the NTT DATA online test?
It is moderate. The aptitude and reasoning questions are at the level of standard placement papers, and the programming section tests basics such as output prediction, loops, arrays and OOP rather than advanced algorithms. The main challenge is the sectional cut-off, so practise all four sections evenly and manage time carefully.
Q3Tell me about yourself. How should I answer this at NTT DATA?
Keep it to about a minute: your degree and college, one or two projects or internships with the technology you used, a strength backed by an example, and why an IT services role at NTT DATA fits your plan. Avoid repeating your resume line by line and end on what you want to learn in the role.
Q4Explain your final-year project. What is the interviewer looking for?
They want to see that you understand what you built, not just that it works. State the problem, the architecture, your specific contribution, the tools used and one difficulty you solved. Be ready for follow-ups such as why you chose a particular database or how you would scale it, because those reveal genuine understanding.
Q5Why do you want to join NTT DATA?
Link your answer to something concrete: the company's Japanese and global client base, its work in cloud, data and AI, structured fresher training, or a specific practice such as SAP or Salesforce that matches your skills. Show that you have read about the company and that you are interested in a long-term services career rather than any job that comes first.
Q6What is the fresher salary and eligibility at NTT DATA India?
Entry roles such as Associate Software Engineer typically start in the range of about 3.5 to 5 lakh per annum, with higher bands for specialist or coding-track hires, and laterals are paid on experience and skill. Eligibility is usually a B.E., B.Tech, MCA or M.Sc with around 60 percent throughout and no active backlogs. Read the exact drive notification, since criteria change by batch.
