About Pfizer

Pfizer is one of the world's largest biopharmaceutical companies, developing and selling medicines and vaccines across oncology, vaccines, internal medicine, inflammation, immunology and rare diseases. Its India operations are headquartered in Mumbai and include a commercial business with a large field force, a manufacturing footprint in Goa, and a global capability centre in Chennai that supports technology, data, finance, procurement and business operations for the company worldwide.

Pfizer employs several thousand people in India across sales, medical affairs, regulatory, quality, supply chain, finance, HR and digital. Hiring is mostly lateral, with a steady flow of roles for pharmacy, science and management graduates in sales and medical, and for engineering, analytics and finance professionals at the Chennai centre. Campus programmes run at a smaller scale for management trainees and early-career technologists.

The company places heavy emphasis on integrity, compliance and patient focus. Interviewers use structured, behaviour-based questions and expect candidates to give specific examples of how they have worked with courage, excellence, equity and joy, the values Pfizer uses to describe its culture.

Pfizer hiring process

Pfizer India hires through its global careers portal, job portals such as Jobaaj, recruitment partners and employee referrals. The process is structured and largely virtual, with the number of interviews depending on the seniority and function of the role.

1. Online application

You apply against a specific requisition on the careers site. The application asks for education, experience, work authorisation and a few role-specific screening questions. Keep your resume aligned to the job description, because initial screening is done against the listed requirements.

2. Recruiter screening call

A talent acquisition partner calls for 20 to 30 minutes to confirm your experience, current compensation, notice period and motivation. For field sales roles, they also check territory preference and comfort with travel.

3. Assessment or case exercise

Depending on the role, you may complete an online aptitude or behavioural assessment, a technical test for digital and data roles, or a short presentation or case exercise for sales and marketing roles.

4. Hiring manager interview

A 45 to 60 minute structured interview with the hiring manager covering domain knowledge, past achievements and behavioural questions. Expect the STAR format to be used explicitly.

5. Panel or cross-functional interviews

One or two further interviews with peers, a skip-level leader or stakeholders from medical, compliance or finance, depending on the function. For senior roles a regional or global leader may join virtually.

6. Offer, background check and onboarding

Pfizer runs thorough background and education verification and, for some roles, a drug and health screening. Once cleared, HR issues the offer and you join a structured onboarding programme with compliance training in the first weeks.

What to expect

Pfizer interview rounds

Rounds vary by function. The sequence below is typical for a mid-level role in sales, medical or the Chennai capability centre.

Round 1: Recruiter screen

A telephonic or video conversation of 20 to 30 minutes focused on fit against the requisition, compensation expectations and logistics.

  • Summary of your experience and reason for change
  • Notice period and location flexibility
  • Initial view on why Pfizer

Round 2: Assessment

For field roles: a short online test of aptitude and situational judgement. For digital, data and finance roles at the Chennai centre: a technical test or take-home exercise, typically 60 to 90 minutes.

  • SQL, Python or data-modelling problems for analytics roles
  • Accounting, reconciliations and controls for finance roles
  • Situational questions on handling a doctor's objection for sales roles

Round 3: Hiring manager interview

The core round. Structured, competency-based, 45 to 60 minutes. Prepare three to five detailed examples covering results, collaboration, dealing with setbacks and acting with integrity.

  • Describe a time you exceeded a target and how you did it
  • How do you keep up with therapy-area science
  • A time you had to escalate a compliance concern

Round 4: Functional or panel interview

With a peer, a second manager or a cross-functional stakeholder. It probes technical depth and how you work across teams. Sales candidates may be asked to present a territory plan; medical candidates may discuss a clinical paper.

  • Plan the first 90 days in a new territory or process
  • Explain a complex scientific or technical concept simply
  • Handling disagreement with a stakeholder

Round 5: Leadership and HR conversation

A final discussion with a senior leader and HR on values, career aspirations and the offer. Pfizer expects candidates to ask thoughtful questions about the team and growth paths.

  • What does patient focus mean in your work
  • Long-term career direction
  • Compensation and joining date

Pfizer interview FAQs

Q1How many interview rounds does Pfizer India have?

Most roles involve three to five conversations: a recruiter screen, an assessment or exercise where relevant, a structured hiring manager interview, one or two panel or cross-functional interviews and a final leadership or HR discussion. Junior field roles are at the shorter end; Chennai capability centre and senior roles tend to have more interviews.

Q2How long does the Pfizer hiring process take?

Typically four to eight weeks from application to offer. Interviews are scheduled around panel availability, and the background verification after the final round can add one to two weeks. Recruiters generally keep candidates updated, so ask at each stage what the next step and expected timeline are.

Q3Tell me about a time you demonstrated integrity when it was difficult.

Pfizer asks this in some form in nearly every interview. Use a real example where you chose the compliant or honest route at some personal cost, such as reporting a data error or refusing to promote a product outside its approved use. Describe the situation, your action and the outcome, and what it taught you about speaking up.

Q4How would you approach a doctor who is loyal to a competitor brand?

Explain that you would first understand what the doctor values, such as efficacy data, patient affordability or safety profile, then share relevant clinical evidence for your product within approved messaging, offer patient support programmes where available and follow up consistently. Stress that you would never make off-label claims or disparage the competitor.

Q5Why Pfizer rather than another pharma company?

Point to specifics: Pfizer's pipeline in oncology or vaccines, its global scale, the Chennai capability centre's role in the company's digital transformation or its investment in India. Then connect that to your own goals, for example wanting to work on breakthrough therapies or to build a career in a global technology or finance function.

Q6What are the eligibility and salary expectations for Pfizer roles in India?

Field sales roles usually require a science, pharmacy or management degree and value prior pharma experience; medical affairs roles need MBBS, PharmD or a life-sciences postgraduate degree; Chennai centre roles are open to engineering, analytics and finance professionals. Compensation is competitive with top multinational pharma companies, with fixed pay, variable bonus, insurance and retirement benefits set by grade.
