About Tata Consultancy Services Limited

Tata Consultancy Services Limited, universally known as TCS, is India's largest IT services company and one of the most valuable companies on the Indian stock exchanges. Part of the Tata group and headquartered in Mumbai, TCS serves clients in banking, insurance, retail, manufacturing, life sciences, telecom and government across more than 50 countries, with practices spanning cloud, data and AI, cybersecurity, enterprise platforms, engineering services and business process operations. It employs over six lakh people, the vast majority of them in India.

TCS is the single largest recruiter of engineering freshers in the country. Entry hiring runs through the TCS National Qualifier Test, or NQT, which feeds three tracks: Ninja, the standard intake; Digital, for candidates who clear the advanced section; and Prime, the highest band for the strongest performers. Freshers join as Assistant System Engineer trainees, and laterals are hired across development, cloud, SAP, data, testing, infrastructure and consulting in centres across Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Noida, Kochi, Bhubaneswar, Indore and Nagpur.

TCS values consistent academics, sound programming and database fundamentals, integrity and adaptability, and it expects freshers to accept any location and a service agreement.

Step by step

Tata Consultancy Services Limited hiring process

1. Register for the TCS NQT

Freshers from eligible batches register on the TCS NextStep portal and apply for the National Qualifier Test, either through their campus or the all-India off-campus window. Typical eligibility is a B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech, MCA or M.Sc with 60 percent or 6 CGPA in Class 10, 12, diploma and graduation, no more than one active backlog at the time of the test, and a gap of at most two years in education. Laterals apply directly to postings or through the TCS iBegin portal.

2. Take the NQT

The NQT is a proctored online test with a Foundation section of numerical, verbal and reasoning ability and an Advanced section with advanced quantitative and reasoning questions plus coding. Clearing the Foundation section makes you eligible for Ninja interviews; clearing the Advanced section as well makes you eligible for Digital and Prime consideration.

3. Technical interview

A video interview with a TCS engineer or architect on your projects, core subjects and a coding problem. Digital and Prime candidates face deeper questions, and Prime candidates are usually asked to present an AI, data or engineering project.

4. Managerial round

For Digital and Prime tracks, and for laterals, a second interview with a delivery manager tests problem-solving approach, ownership and how you handle pressure and ambiguity.

5. HR interview

A short discussion on motivation, relocation, the service agreement and salary expectations. For Ninja candidates it is often combined with the technical round into one interview.

6. Offer, verification and Initial Learning Programme

Selected candidates receive a letter of intent, complete document and background verification, and join an onboarding batch. Freshers go through the Initial Learning Programme, a structured training period, before being deployed to a project.

What to expect

Tata Consultancy Services Limited interview rounds

TCS keeps the same NQT for all tracks but varies the number of interview rounds: one interview for Ninja, two for Digital, and two technical rounds plus HR for Prime. Laterals generally face two technical rounds and HR.

Round 1: TCS NQT

A proctored online test of roughly three hours. The Foundation section covers numerical ability, verbal ability and reasoning ability; the Advanced section adds advanced quantitative and reasoning questions and a coding section of two or more problems in a language of your choice.

  • Number systems, percentages, time and work, data interpretation
  • Reading comprehension, sentence completion, error spotting
  • Series, puzzles, data sufficiency, seating arrangement
  • Coding: string manipulation, arrays, prime and pattern problems, dynamic programming at the higher level

Round 2: Technical interview

Thirty to forty-five minutes on video with an engineer or architect. The interviewer starts from your resume and projects, then moves to fundamentals and a live coding or SQL exercise.

  • OOP concepts, difference between abstract class and interface, exception handling
  • SQL joins, subqueries, indexes, write a query for a given schema
  • Data structures: linked list reversal, stack via queues, binary search
  • Digital and Prime: complexity analysis, design of a small system, an AI or data project walk-through

Round 3: Managerial interview (Digital, Prime and laterals)

Twenty to thirty minutes with a delivery or project manager. It tests attitude, ownership and how you think through problems rather than syntax.

  • A time you handled a difficult teammate or a slipping deadline
  • How would you approach a requirement you do not fully understand
  • Questions on your project's design decisions and trade-offs

Round 4: HR interview

Ten to twenty minutes with a recruiter, sometimes merged with the technical round for Ninja candidates.

  • Why TCS and what do you know about the Tata group
  • Willingness to relocate anywhere in India and to sign the service agreement
  • Career plans, strengths and weaknesses, and any gaps or backlogs on your record

Tata Consultancy Services Limited interview FAQs

Q1How many rounds are there in the TCS interview process?

Everyone takes the NQT first. Ninja candidates then have a single interview that covers technical, managerial and HR questions. Digital candidates have a technical interview followed by a managerial and HR interview. Prime candidates face two technical rounds and HR. Results for off-campus drives typically arrive two to six weeks after the interview, with joining dates staggered across the year.

Q2How difficult is the TCS NQT and which track should I aim for?

The Foundation section is of moderate placement-paper difficulty and clearing it with a good margin secures Ninja interviews. The Advanced section, especially the coding part, is considerably harder and is what separates Digital and Prime candidates. Most hires land in the Ninja band, so aim for Digital if your coding is strong but do not neglect the Foundation section, which is compulsory for every track.

Q3Tell me about yourself. How should I answer at TCS?

Give a one-minute summary: your degree and college, your strongest programming language and tools, one project with a concrete result, and why a career at TCS suits your plan. Mention any relevant certification or internship. Speak naturally rather than reciting your resume, and close with what you hope to learn in the Initial Learning Programme.

Q4What is the difference between an abstract class and an interface?

An abstract class can hold state and partly implemented methods and supports single inheritance, while an interface declares a contract that a class promises to implement and allows a class to implement several interfaces. In Java, interfaces can also carry default and static methods. Give a quick example such as a Vehicle abstract class versus a Drivable interface to show you can apply the difference.

Q5Why do you want to join TCS?

Refer to specifics: the scale and variety of clients, the Tata group's reputation for ethics, the structured Initial Learning Programme, or TCS's work in cloud, AI and engineering services that matches your interests. Then link it to your own goal, for example moving from a trainee role into a specialist cloud or data path. Avoid answers that could apply to any IT company.

Q6What is the salary for TCS freshers and what is the eligibility?

Recent cycles have advertised the Ninja band at roughly 3.5 to 4 lakh per annum, Digital at about 7 to 7.5 lakh and Prime at roughly 9 to 11 lakh, with laterals paid by experience and skill. Eligibility is usually 60 percent or 6 CGPA across Class 10, 12 and graduation, at most one active backlog at the time of the test and a limited education gap. Verify the figures in the current NQT notification, since they are revised each year.
