About Virtusa

Virtusa is a global IT services and digital engineering company headquartered in the United States and majority-owned by Baring Private Equity Asia. It serves banking and financial services, healthcare, insurance, telecom and media clients with software engineering, cloud, data and AI and quality engineering services. India is its largest delivery base, with big centres in Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Pune and Mumbai and a total headcount of roughly 30,000 people worldwide.

Freshers join as Engineering Trainees or Associate Engineers, mainly through campus placements and the company's Neural Hack coding contest, which offers fast-track interviews and higher-band offers to strong performers. Off-campus drives run through the year for recent graduates. Laterals are hired across Java, .NET, cloud, data engineering, testing automation, Salesforce, Pega and other platforms, often for large banking clients.

Virtusa positions itself on engineering depth rather than pure staffing, and interviewers test coding ability and clarity of thought more than many peers. Candidates who have practised programming and can explain their projects clearly tend to do well.

Virtusa hiring process

Fresher hiring runs through an online test and two or three interviews, largely virtual. The steps below describe the typical 2025-26 flow; laterals skip the first assessment and go straight to technical interviews.

1. Registration or campus shortlist

Apply through your placement cell, register for an off-campus drive on the Virtusa careers site, or enter the Neural Hack contest. You can also apply for lateral openings via a job portal such as Jobaaj. Eligibility for freshers is typically a BE, BTech, ME, MTech or MCA with a minimum marks threshold and no active backlogs.

2. Online assessment

A proctored test with quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and verbal ability sections followed by a coding section with two or three problems. Neural Hack participants take a longer coding-only round whose top scorers skip to interviews and compete for premium offers.

3. Technical interview

A 30 to 45 minute interview with an engineer that reviews your coding round, asks you to write a program live, and covers data structures, OOP, databases and your projects. Laterals get one or two deeper rounds on their technology stack.

4. Managerial or second technical round

Some panels add a round with a delivery manager who checks problem-solving approach, learning attitude and how you would handle client work and deadlines.

5. HR interview

A short conversation on your background, relocation, shift flexibility, service agreement for trainees and salary. Offers are usually communicated within one to two weeks.

6. Offer and onboarding

Freshers receive a letter of intent followed by a joining date, document verification and a training programme on the assigned technology stack before deployment to a project.

What to expect

Virtusa interview rounds

Expect three to four rounds for freshers. The coding round is the main filter; the interviews are conversational but do include live programming.

Round 1: Online aptitude and coding test

About 90 to 120 minutes in total. Sectional cut-offs apply and coding carries the most weight.

  • Quantitative aptitude, logical reasoning and English
  • Two or three coding problems on arrays, strings, sorting and simple mathematics
  • Neural Hack: longer, harder coding set with rankings

Round 2: Technical interview

A 30 to 45 minute interview with a developer, often with a shared editor.

  • Write a program live, for example reversing words or finding duplicates
  • OOP concepts, difference between abstract classes and interfaces
  • SQL joins, normalisation and basic queries
  • Explain your academic project and the technologies used

Round 3: Managerial round

A 20 to 30 minute discussion with a delivery or project manager on attitude and adaptability.

  • How would you learn a new technology in two weeks?
  • Describe a team situation where you resolved a conflict
  • Willingness to work on banking or healthcare client projects

Round 4: HR interview

A 15 to 20 minute conversation to close the process.

  • Why Virtusa?
  • Relocation to Chennai, Hyderabad or another centre
  • Comfort with a service agreement and shift timings

Virtusa interview FAQs

Q1How many rounds are there in the Virtusa interview process?

Freshers typically go through an online aptitude and coding test, a technical interview, sometimes a managerial round and an HR interview, so three to four stages. Neural Hack winners skip the aptitude test and go directly to interviews. Laterals face two technical rounds and HR. Results usually come within one to three weeks of the final interview.

Q2Is the Virtusa coding round difficult?

The regular drive coding problems are easy to medium, involving arrays, strings, patterns and basic logic, and are manageable with regular practice in any one language. Neural Hack questions are harder and used to rank candidates for premium offers. In the interview you may be asked to write short programs live, so practise coding without an IDE.

Q3What is the difference between an abstract class and an interface?

Say that an abstract class can have both implemented and abstract methods plus state, and a class can extend only one, while an interface declares a contract that a class can implement many of, with default methods allowed in modern Java. Use an abstract class for shared base behaviour and interfaces for capabilities such as Comparable. Give a small example from your project.

Q4Write a program to check whether a string is a palindrome.

Explain the approach before coding: normalise case and optionally strip spaces, then compare characters from both ends moving inward with two pointers, returning false on the first mismatch. State that it runs in linear time and constant extra space. Mention edge cases such as empty strings and single characters, then write the code cleanly in your preferred language.

Q5Why do you want to join Virtusa?

Mention its focus on digital engineering for large banking, healthcare and telecom clients, its training programmes for freshers, and specific technologies you want to work on such as cloud or data engineering. Add the Neural Hack culture of rewarding coding skill if relevant to you, and tie it to your career goal of becoming a strong engineer rather than a generic answer.

Q6What is the Virtusa fresher salary and eligibility?

Engineering Trainee offers typically fall in the mid-single-digit lakhs per year, with Neural Hack and specialist tracks offering noticeably higher packages. Eligibility is usually a BE, BTech, ME, MTech or MCA in the relevant year with a consistent academic record of around 60 percent or above and no active backlogs; some drives accept a gap of up to one year.
