Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) is India's largest life insurer and a state-owned financial institution, established on 1 September 1956 under the Life Insurance Corporation Act passed by Parliament that June. It was formed by nationalising and merging 154 Indian life insurers, 16 foreign companies and 75 provident societies.

Headquartered in Mumbai, Maharashtra, LIC offers life insurance, pension and investment products through a nationwide branch and agency network, and employs close to 100,000 people. The corporation listed on the NSE and BSE in 2022 while remaining majority-owned by the Government of India.
