About Ericsson

Ericsson is a Swedish telecommunications equipment and services company and one of the leading suppliers of 5G radio access, core network, transport and network management technology to mobile operators worldwide. It also runs managed services and network operations for operators and provides enterprise wireless and IoT solutions.

India is one of Ericsson's largest bases outside Sweden, with research and development centres in Bengaluru, Chennai and Gurugram, global service delivery and network operations centres in Noida and other cities, and manufacturing in Pune. Teams work on 5G software, cloud-native core, automation, AI for network operations, radio design and large-scale network deployment and optimisation for Indian and international operators. The company hires engineering graduates through campus placements and off-campus drives into graduate engineer trainee and network engineer roles, and experienced professionals for software development, solution architecture, project management and managed services.

Ericsson looks for strong fundamentals in telecommunications, networking and programming, comfort with automation and cloud technologies, and an ability to work in global, cross-functional teams. Interviewers value curiosity about how mobile networks actually work, structured problem-solving and clear communication with customers and colleagues across time zones.

Ericsson hiring process

Ericsson runs a structured process that is largely virtual for lateral hiring and compressed into a placement drive for campus candidates. Most candidates go through the steps below.

1. Application or campus shortlist

Apply on the Ericsson careers portal, through a job portal such as Jobaaj, via referral or through campus placements. Campus shortlists are typically based on branch, such as electronics, telecommunications and computer science, and academic performance.

2. Online assessment

A timed online test with aptitude and reasoning sections plus a technical section on networking, telecommunications fundamentals, programming and, for software roles, coding problems. Some drives add a psychometric or English communication component.

3. Technical interview

A 45 to 60 minute interview with an engineer from the hiring team on domain fundamentals such as mobile network architecture, protocols, Linux, cloud and scripting, along with questions on your projects and internships.

4. Advanced technical or panel interview

For software, R&D and architect roles, a second technical round on design, coding and problem-solving; for managed services roles, a scenario-based interview on troubleshooting and operations processes.

5. Managerial interview

The hiring manager assesses fit with the team, ownership, ability to work with global stakeholders and, for experienced hires, leadership and customer-facing capability.

6. HR interview and offer

HR covers compensation, location, shift or travel requirements for deployment roles, joining date and background verification. Offers usually follow within one to two weeks of the final round.

What to expect

Ericsson interview rounds

The rounds below describe a typical graduate engineer or network engineer hire; software and R&D roles add coding and design content within the same structure.

Round 1: Online assessment

Around 60 to 90 minutes with aptitude, reasoning and technical sections, sometimes including a short coding exercise.

  • Quantitative aptitude and logical reasoning
  • Networking basics: OSI layers, IP addressing, routing and switching
  • Telecom fundamentals: cellular architecture, modulation, handover
  • Programming in C, Java or Python for software tracks

Round 2: Technical interview

A 45 to 60 minute interview with a team engineer on fundamentals and your projects.

  • Explain the architecture of a 4G or 5G network and the role of the core
  • Difference between TCP and UDP and where each is used in telecom
  • Linux commands, shell scripting and basic automation
  • Walk through a final-year project or internship in detail

Round 3: Advanced technical or scenario round

A 45 to 60 minute round that goes deeper into design, coding or operations depending on the role.

  • Software: object-oriented design, data structures and a coding problem
  • R&D: protocol design, concurrency and performance considerations
  • Managed services: troubleshoot a site outage or degraded key performance indicators
  • Cloud-native concepts such as containers, Kubernetes and microservices

Round 4: Managerial interview

A 30 to 45 minute conversation with the hiring manager on collaboration, ownership and adaptability.

  • Working with teams across Sweden, India and customer locations
  • A time you learned a new technology quickly to deliver
  • Willingness to travel or work in shifts for network operations

Round 5: HR interview

A 15 to 20 minute discussion on compensation, location and formalities.

  • Why Ericsson and interest in telecommunications
  • Salary expectations and notice period

Ericsson interview questions

Ericsson interview FAQs

Q1How many rounds are there in the Ericsson interview process?

Usually four to five: an online assessment, one or two technical interviews, a managerial interview and an HR discussion. Campus drives often complete the technical and managerial rounds on the same day, while lateral hiring is virtual and spread across two to four weeks depending on the team's availability.

Q2How difficult is the Ericsson interview for freshers?

Moderate. The aptitude section is standard, and the technical rounds focus on fundamentals of networking, telecommunications and programming rather than obscure topics. Candidates who can explain how a mobile network works end to end, know basic Linux and scripting, and describe their projects clearly tend to do well. Software and R&D tracks expect stronger coding ability.

Q3Explain the difference between 4G and 5G networks.

Cover the key points: 5G uses new radio with wider spectrum including millimetre wave, supports much higher throughput and lower latency, introduces network slicing and a service-based cloud-native core, and is designed for massive IoT and mission-critical use cases alongside mobile broadband. Mention non-standalone versus standalone deployments to show you understand how operators are migrating.

Q4What is the difference between TCP and UDP?

TCP is connection-oriented and reliable, with acknowledgements, retransmission, ordering and congestion control, which suits data transfer where accuracy matters. UDP is connectionless and lightweight with no delivery guarantee, which suits real-time voice, video and signalling where low latency matters more than occasional loss. Give telecom examples such as VoLTE media over UDP-based RTP.

Q5Tell me about a project where you solved a technical problem.

Choose a project you personally worked on, describe the problem and constraints, the approach you took, the tools or technologies involved and the outcome. Interviewers will ask follow-up questions on your specific contribution and on alternatives you considered, so avoid overstating your role and be ready to discuss what you would improve.

Q6What is the salary and eligibility for a graduate engineer at Ericsson India?

Ericsson hires engineering graduates mainly from electronics, telecommunications, computer science and related branches, with a minimum academic cut-off that varies by drive. Graduate engineer trainee compensation is typically in the mid single-digit lakhs per year, with higher bands for software and R&D roles in Bengaluru and Chennai, and growth linked to certifications and performance.
