About SAP
SAP is the world's leading enterprise application software company. Its ERP, finance, supply chain, HR and customer software runs the core operations of the majority of large companies globally, and it has spent the last decade moving customers to its cloud portfolio built around S/4HANA Cloud, the SAP Business Technology Platform and Business AI with the Joule assistant. It is headquartered in Walldorf, Germany.
SAP Labs India, headquartered in Bengaluru with campuses in Pune, Gurugram, Hyderabad and Mumbai, is the company's largest research and development hub outside Germany and one of the biggest software product centres in the country. Indian teams build and run core products across S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba, analytics and the technology platform, alongside support, consulting, cloud operations and sales teams.
SAP hires freshers through campus placements and its early-talent and academy programmes, which combine structured training with rotational project work in development, consulting and presales. Experienced professionals join across software engineering, cloud and DevOps, data science, product management, functional consulting, quality and sales. SAP is known for stability, a strong learning culture and a well-rated work environment, and it looks for people who pair solid fundamentals with an interest in how businesses actually run.
SAP hiring process
SAP Labs India follows a clearly defined process for both campus and lateral hiring. Most of it is virtual and it usually completes within three to five weeks.
1. Application and shortlisting
Apply through the SAP careers portal, a campus drive or a referral. For campus hiring, eligibility is normally a computer science or related engineering degree with a minimum CGPA and no active backlogs. Lateral shortlisting looks for depth in the relevant stack, whether that is Java, ABAP, JavaScript, cloud platforms or SAP functional modules.
2. Online assessment
A timed test on an online platform with coding problems and multiple-choice questions on programming, data structures, databases and, for campus drives, aptitude and logical reasoning. Consulting and presales roles may have a case-based or situational assessment instead.
3. Technical interviews
Two rounds of 45 to 60 minutes with engineers or consultants from the hiring team. They cover problem solving, core computer science, your projects and, for experienced candidates, design and architecture. Functional consultants are tested on business processes and the relevant SAP module.
4. Managerial round
A discussion with the hiring manager on fit, motivation, how you work in a team, and scenarios drawn from the team's actual work. It often includes a light technical or domain component.
5. HR round
Compensation, location, joining date, notice period and an explanation of SAP's benefits, flexible work policy and learning programmes.
6. Offer and onboarding
Offers are typically released within one to two weeks of the final round. Freshers joining through the academy programmes go through several months of structured training before being placed in a team.
SAP interview rounds
This is the usual shape of a developer loop at SAP Labs India. Functional consulting and presales loops keep the same structure but replace coding with process and scenario questions.
Round 1: Online test
60 to 90 minutes, taken remotely on a proctored platform. Two coding problems of easy to medium difficulty plus objective questions. Campus versions add quantitative aptitude and verbal sections.
- Arrays, strings, hashing and recursion
- SQL queries, joins and indexing basics
- Object-oriented concepts and exception handling
Round 2: Technical interview I
A 60 minute video interview with a developer. Live coding on one or two problems, followed by questions on your resume projects and on fundamentals such as operating systems, networking and databases.
- Implement an LRU cache
- Detect a cycle in a linked list or graph
- Explain the difference between processes and threads
Round 3: Technical interview II or design
60 minutes with a senior developer or architect. Freshers get object-oriented and low-level design plus deeper project questions. Experienced candidates get a system design discussion, often on enterprise scenarios like multi-tenant cloud services, integration or data pipelines.
- Design a service that integrates two enterprise systems reliably
- Design the classes for an invoice approval workflow
- How would you make an API backward compatible?
Round 4: Managerial interview
45 minutes with the hiring manager. Behavioural questions on ownership, collaboration and handling ambiguity, plus a discussion of the product the team owns and what your first months would look like.
- A time you handled conflicting priorities
- How do you keep learning in a fast-changing stack?
- What do you know about SAP's products and customers?
Round 5: HR interview
A 30 minute conversation on compensation, relocation to Bengaluru or Pune, expected joining date and your questions about SAP's culture, benefits and growth paths.
- Why SAP over a services company or a startup?
- Your long-term career plans

SAP interview FAQs
Q1How many rounds are there in the SAP Labs interview?
Typically an online test followed by four interviews: two technical rounds, a managerial round and an HR round. Campus hiring often merges the two technical rounds into one on the drive day. Experienced candidates for senior roles may have an additional architecture or leadership discussion.
Q2Is the SAP interview difficult for freshers?
The coding questions are generally easy to medium and focus on fundamentals rather than tricky algorithms. What candidates find harder is the depth of questioning on their own projects and on core subjects like databases and operating systems. Solid basics, honest project explanations and some awareness of what SAP builds go a long way.
Q3What do you know about SAP and its products?
Describe SAP as the leading enterprise software company whose ERP and cloud applications run finance, supply chain, HR and customer operations for most large companies. Name S/4HANA, SuccessFactors, Ariba and the Business Technology Platform, mention the shift to cloud and Business AI, and relate one of these to something you have studied or built. Depth on one product beats a memorised list.
Q4Explain a project from your resume in detail. How should I prepare?
Pick your strongest project and prepare a three-minute walkthrough: the problem, your specific contribution, the technology choices and why, the hardest bug or design decision, and what you would improve. SAP interviewers probe deeply, so be ready to draw the architecture and defend each decision with reasons.
Q5Write a SQL query to find the second highest salary in each department. Why is this asked?
Database skills matter at SAP because its products are built around business data. Show a solution with window functions such as DENSE_RANK partitioned by department, then discuss an alternative with a correlated subquery and the performance difference. Interviewers want to see that you understand joins, grouping and indexing, not just memorised syntax.
Q6What is the fresher salary and eligibility at SAP Labs India?
SAP hires freshers with a B.E., B.Tech, M.Tech or MCA in computer science or related fields, usually with a minimum CGPA and no active backlogs. Fresher packages at SAP Labs are typically well above services-company offers and include base salary, a performance bonus and benefits; developer associates who join through the academy programmes receive structured training before placement.
