About UpGrad

upGrad is one of India's largest online higher-education and upskilling companies, headquartered in Mumbai. It offers degree programmes, certifications and bootcamps in partnership with Indian and international universities, along with study-abroad services, enterprise training and test preparation. Learners are working professionals and recent graduates across data, technology, management, law and finance.

The company has grown through acquisitions and now employs several thousand people across Mumbai, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR and other cities. Its largest hiring volumes are in admissions and learner counselling (inside sales), followed by academic operations, content, marketing, product and engineering. Sales roles hire freshers and early-career candidates on an almost continuous basis; product and engineering hiring is smaller and more selective.

upGrad values persuasion, resilience and a learner-first attitude in its sales teams, and strong ownership and data fluency in product and academic roles. Interviewers want to see that you can hold a structured conversation, handle objections calmly and stay motivated by targets.

UpGrad hiring process

upGrad hires across the year through its careers page, job portals such as Jobaaj, employee referrals and campus tie-ups. The process is short and fast-moving for sales roles and longer for product, engineering and academic positions.

1. Application and recruiter screen

After you apply, a recruiter calls to confirm your background, communication skills, notice period and interest in the role. For admissions counsellor roles this call is itself an assessment of how clearly and confidently you speak.

2. Online assessment or assignment

Sales candidates may get a short aptitude and situational judgement test. Product, marketing and content roles often receive a take-home assignment, such as analysing a funnel, writing a short lesson plan or proposing a feature. Engineering candidates get a coding test on a standard platform.

3. Functional interview

A team lead or manager interviews you on the specifics of the role. For sales this is a mock pitch: you are asked to sell a programme to the interviewer, who plays a hesitant learner. For product and engineering it is a problem-solving or technical discussion.

4. Manager or leadership round

A senior manager or head of department checks depth, motivation and fit. Expect questions on how you handle targets, rejection and ambiguity, and what you know about upGrad's programmes and competitors.

5. HR discussion and offer

HR closes on compensation, incentive structure, joining date and work location, and shares the offer letter. Background verification and document collection happen before joining.

What to expect

UpGrad interview rounds

Admissions counsellor and inside-sales roles form the bulk of upGrad's hiring, so the rounds below follow that track first, with notes for product, academic and engineering roles.

Round 1: Telephonic screening

A 10 to 15 minute call with a recruiter. It is mainly about communication and intent, so speak clearly, keep answers crisp and show genuine interest in education and sales.

  • Walk me through your background
  • Why sales and why edtech
  • Comfort with targets and a six-day or rotational schedule

Round 2: Online test or assignment

Sales: a short online test of basic aptitude, English and situational questions. Product and marketing: a take-home case with a two to three day deadline. Engineering: one to two coding problems in about 60 minutes.

  • Situational judgement on handling an angry learner
  • Funnel analysis: where are leads dropping and what would you change
  • Data structures and SQL basics for engineering roles

Round 3: Mock pitch or technical interview

The decisive round for sales. The interviewer plays a prospective learner with objections about fees, time and relevance. You are judged on discovery questions, structure, objection handling and closing.

  • Pitch a data science or MBA programme to a working professional
  • Handle the objection that the course is too expensive
  • For engineers: system design at a basic level and code review discussion

Round 4: Manager or leadership interview

A 30 minute conversation with a sales head, product head or academic director on your resilience, learning attitude and understanding of the business.

  • Tell me about a time you missed a target and what you did next
  • What do you know about upGrad's competitors
  • How would you prioritise 50 leads with different intent levels

Round 5: HR round

Compensation, incentives, location and joining formalities, plus a final check on expectations about the role.

  • Fixed versus incentive split and how incentives are calculated
  • Notice period and joining date
  • Work-from-office expectations

UpGrad interview FAQs

Q1How many rounds does the upGrad interview process have?

Sales and admissions counsellor roles typically have three to four rounds: a telephonic screen, a mock sales pitch with a team lead, a manager round and an HR discussion. Product, engineering and academic roles usually add an assignment or coding test and one more functional interview, making four to five rounds in total.

Q2How quickly does upGrad complete hiring?

Sales hiring is fast; it is common to finish all rounds within one to two weeks and sometimes in a single day during walk-in or bulk drives. Product and engineering hiring typically takes three to five weeks because of the assignment and multiple panel interviews. Offers are usually shared within a few days of the final round.

Q3Sell me this programme.

Do not start pitching immediately. Ask two or three discovery questions about the learner's current role, goals and constraints, then connect the programme's outcomes to those goals, address cost with the return on investment and financing options, and close with a clear next step. Interviewers reward structure and listening more than a memorised script.

Q4How do you handle rejection and pressure from targets?

Give a real example, ideally with numbers, of a time you fell short and what you changed, such as improving follow-up discipline or qualifying leads better. Emphasise that you treat targets as feedback rather than as a verdict, and describe a routine that keeps you consistent through a tough week.

Q5Why edtech and why upGrad specifically?

Talk about the growth of online higher education for working professionals, then mention something concrete about upGrad, such as its university partnerships, degree programmes or study-abroad offerings. Link this to your own experience, for example a course you took online or a friend whose career changed after upskilling.

Q6What is the salary structure for an admissions counsellor at upGrad?

Entry-level counsellor packages typically combine a fixed salary in the low-to-mid single-digit lakhs per annum with performance incentives that can add a significant amount for consistent achievers. Ask HR for the exact fixed-to-variable split, how incentives are calculated and paid, and what the ramp-up expectations are in your first quarter.
