About Workday

Workday is an American enterprise software company that provides cloud applications for finance, human resources, planning and analytics to large organisations worldwide. It employs around 20,000 people and serves thousands of customers, including a large share of the world's biggest companies. In India, Workday has offices in Pune and Chennai that house product engineering, quality and site reliability teams, professional services consultants who implement Workday for customers, customer support and internal corporate functions.

Engineering hiring in India covers backend and full-stack developers, machine learning engineers, quality engineers and infrastructure specialists, mostly through lateral hiring and referrals, with early-career programmes for graduates. Workday also hires functional consultants and support analysts who know its HCM or Financials products, and these roles are a common path for professionals coming from HR technology, payroll and ERP backgrounds.

Workday states its core values as employees, customer service, innovation, integrity, fun and profitability, and interviewers ask about them directly. It looks for strong fundamentals, ownership, empathy for customers and collaborative behaviour.

Workday hiring process

Workday's hiring loop is structured and mostly virtual, typically taking three to five weeks from recruiter call to offer.

1. Application and referral

Apply on the Workday careers site, which naturally runs on Workday's own recruiting product, through LinkedIn or a job portal such as Jobaaj. Employee referrals are common and speed up screening.

2. Recruiter screen

A 20 to 30 minute call covering your experience, interest in Workday, work authorisation, location and compensation. The recruiter explains the loop for your role.

3. Technical or functional screen

Engineers do a 60 minute coding interview or an online assessment focused on data structures and problem solving. Consultants and support candidates get a functional screen on Workday modules, HR or finance processes, and how they have handled customer issues.

4. Virtual onsite loop

Three to four interviews on one day or spread across a week: two coding or technical design sessions, a system design round for experienced engineers, and a hiring manager conversation. Functional roles get a case or configuration scenario and a customer-facing role-play.

5. Values and behavioural interview

A dedicated conversation, sometimes with a leader from another team, on how you have demonstrated Workday's core values, handled conflict and supported customers or colleagues.

6. Offer and background check

The recruiter extends the offer with base pay, bonus and equity where applicable. Background verification runs before the start date.

What to expect

Workday interview rounds

The rounds below describe the software engineering loop at Workday India. Consulting and support roles follow the same sequence with product and process questions instead of code.

Round 1: Recruiter screen

A short call to align on role, level and logistics. Interest in enterprise software and a clear reason for applying help you stand out.

  • Why Workday and what you know about its products
  • Current stack, team size and your role in it
  • Notice period, location and compensation expectations

Round 2: Coding interview

Sixty minutes with an engineer on a shared editor. One or two medium problems, with attention to clean code, testing and complexity analysis. Java and Scala are common on the backend, but you may code in your preferred language.

  • Hash maps, arrays, strings and sorting
  • Trees, graphs and recursion
  • Designing a small class or API with good abstractions

Round 3: System design or technical deep dive

For mid-level and senior engineers, a 60 minute design discussion on a multi-tenant, data-heavy service. Junior candidates instead discuss a past project in depth.

  • Design a payroll or reporting service for thousands of tenants
  • Data consistency, caching and background job processing
  • Security and tenant isolation considerations

Round 4: Hiring manager interview

A 45 minute conversation about your experience, how you work in a team, how you handle production issues and what you want from the role.

  • A project you led and its outcome
  • How you review code and mentor others
  • Questions about the team's roadmap

Round 5: Core values interview

A behavioural interview built around Workday's values. Interviewers want specific examples rather than general statements.

  • A time you put a customer or user first
  • Acting with integrity when it was inconvenient
  • How you contribute to a positive team culture

Workday interview FAQs

Q1How many rounds does Workday have in its interview process?

Typically five to six: a recruiter screen, a technical or functional screen, a virtual onsite of three to four interviews including a hiring manager conversation, and a core values interview. Engineers should expect two coding sessions plus system design at mid-level and above; consultants get product and customer-scenario rounds instead.

Q2How long does the Workday hiring process take?

Around three to five weeks in most cases. The recruiter usually schedules the onsite loop within a week or two of a successful screen, and offers follow a few days after the final debrief. Timelines stretch when the loop is split across interviewer calendars or when additional approvals are needed for senior roles.

Q3Which Workday core value do you identify with most and why?

Choose one, such as employees, customer service or integrity, and back it with a concrete story from your work or studies that shows the value in action. Interviewers ask this to see whether you have read about the company and can reflect on your own behaviour, so avoid simply listing all the values.

Q4How would you design a multi-tenant reporting service?

Clarify requirements first: number of tenants, data volume, latency and isolation needs. Then cover data partitioning by tenant, an API layer with authentication and per-tenant authorisation, asynchronous report generation with a job queue, caching of common reports and monitoring. Mention trade-offs such as shared versus dedicated databases.

Q5Tell me about a time you supported a customer through a difficult issue.

Use a real example: describe the issue, how you communicated with the customer, how you worked with other teams to resolve it and what you did afterwards to prevent a repeat. Workday values customer service highly, so empathy and follow-through are as important as the technical fix.

Q6What is the salary and benefits structure at Workday India?

Workday pays competitively with other US software companies in Pune and Chennai. Packages combine base salary, an annual bonus and restricted stock units for many roles, with total compensation for experienced engineers typically in the double-digit lakhs and beyond. Benefits include health cover, wellbeing programmes and generous leave policies.
