About Cognizant
Cognizant is a US-headquartered IT services and consulting company with its largest operations in India. Founded in Chennai in 1994 and now based in New Jersey, it works with clients in banking and financial services, healthcare and life sciences, insurance, retail, manufacturing and communications, delivering digital engineering, cloud, data and AI, enterprise platforms and business process services. The company employs around 3.5 lakh people worldwide, roughly seven in ten of them in India.
Cognizant's Indian centres in Chennai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, Kolkata, Coimbatore, Kochi, Mumbai and Gurugram make it one of the country's largest fresher recruiters. Entry hiring runs through the GenC programme, with GenC as the broad intake, GenC Next for stronger coders and GenC Pro for candidates with relevant certifications or specialised skills, each with its own pay band. Freshers join as Programmer Analyst Trainee, and laterals are hired across full-stack, cloud, data, SAP, testing, infrastructure and consulting.
Cognizant places unusual weight on English communication, since most delivery is for North American and European clients, and it looks for reliable fundamentals, a service attitude and willingness to relocate across its Indian centres.
Cognizant hiring process
1. Registration and track selection
Freshers register on the Cognizant careers portal or through their college placement cell, choosing GenC, GenC Next or GenC Pro. Typical eligibility is a B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech, MCA or M.Sc with 60 percent throughout, no active backlogs, and a limited gap in education. Laterals apply to specific postings or are approached by recruiters.
2. Communication assessment
A short AI-evaluated test of spoken and written English covering listening, reading aloud, grammar and a free-speech response. It has become a standard first gate for fresher tracks because client communication is central to Cognizant's delivery model.
3. Aptitude and technical assessment
A proctored online test with numerical, verbal and reasoning sections followed by a technical or coding section. GenC Next and GenC Pro candidates face harder coding problems, and the score helps decide which track you are finally offered.
4. Technical interview
A video interview with a Cognizant engineer or lead on your projects, core subjects and a live problem. It usually runs thirty to forty-five minutes.
5. HR interview
A discussion on motivation, relocation, shift flexibility and the service agreement. For freshers it is often clubbed with the technical panel into a single interview.
6. Offer, verification and onboarding
Selected candidates receive a letter of intent, upload documents for background checks and are called for onboarding and training in batches as projects open up.
Cognizant interview rounds
Cognizant's fresher process has four stages in 2025-26, of which the first three are online and the last is a live panel. Laterals typically face a technical screen, one or two technical rounds and HR.
Round 1: Communication assessment
Roughly twenty to thirty minutes on a proctored platform with headphones. It evaluates pronunciation, fluency, grammar and listening comprehension, and is scored automatically.
- Read sentences aloud and repeat what you hear
- Answer open questions such as describing your college or a hobby
- Fill in blanks and correct sentences
Round 2: Aptitude assessment
Numerical ability, verbal ability and logical reasoning, typically around 50 to 60 questions in about an hour with sectional cut-offs.
- Percentages, averages, time and work, data interpretation
- Reading comprehension, para jumbles, error spotting
- Series, syllogisms, puzzles, seating arrangement
Round 3: Technical assessment
For GenC this is a mix of MCQs on programming fundamentals and one or two simple coding problems; for GenC Next and GenC Pro it is two or more coding problems of rising difficulty plus, in some drives, SQL and automata-fix questions.
- Output prediction and debugging in C, Java or Python
- Arrays, strings, recursion, basic sorting and searching
- SQL queries with joins and aggregates
- GenC Next: hashing, dynamic programming, object-oriented design
Round 4: Technical and HR panel
Thirty to forty-five minutes on video with a technical lead and an HR representative, usually in a single sitting.
- Walk through your final-year project and your exact contribution
- OOP concepts, DBMS normalisation, difference between stack and queue
- Why Cognizant, willingness to relocate to any Indian centre and to sign the service agreement
- Strengths, weaknesses and a situation where you handled pressure

Cognizant interview FAQs
Q1How many rounds are there in the Cognizant GenC process?
Four stages: a communication assessment, an aptitude assessment, a technical assessment, and a final panel that combines technical and HR questions. GenC, GenC Next and GenC Pro follow the same flow, but the technical assessment is harder for the higher tracks and your final track depends on assessment and interview performance. Expect three to six weeks from test to result.
Q2How difficult are the Cognizant assessments?
The communication test is easy if your spoken English is clear, but it eliminates a surprising number of candidates who neglect it. The aptitude test is of moderate placement-paper difficulty. The GenC technical test is basic, while GenC Next coding is genuinely challenging and requires practice with data structures, so prepare according to the track you have chosen.
Q3What is the difference between GenC, GenC Next and GenC Pro?
GenC is the largest intake with a foundation-level test and the standard package. GenC Next targets stronger programmers with a harder coding assessment and a higher package. GenC Pro is for candidates with recognised certifications or niche skills such as cloud, SAP or data, and pays in between or above depending on the skill. When asked, explain honestly which track you chose and why it matches your preparation.
Q4Explain normalisation in DBMS with an example.
Normalisation organises tables to reduce redundancy and anomalies. First normal form removes repeating groups so every cell holds a single value; second normal form removes partial dependencies on a composite key; third normal form removes transitive dependencies. Use a student-course example: split one wide table into student, course and enrolment tables so a course name is stored once.
Q5Why do you want to join Cognizant?
Tie your answer to specifics: Cognizant's strength in healthcare and financial services clients, its digital engineering and AI work, the structured GenC training, or a particular technology practice that matches your projects. Then connect it to your own goal, such as becoming a full-stack or cloud engineer. Avoid generic lines about brand value and show that you understand the client-facing nature of the work.
Q6What salary do Cognizant freshers get and what is the eligibility?
GenC offers have typically been around 4 lakh per annum, GenC Next around 6.5 to 7 lakh, and GenC Pro varies with the certification, while laterals are paid by skill and experience. Eligibility is normally a B.E., B.Tech, M.E., M.Tech, MCA or M.Sc with 60 percent throughout, no active backlogs and a limited education gap. Check the current drive notification, as bands and criteria are revised each cycle.
